This weekend at Spa, Richard Verschoor will make his GP3 debut with MP Motorsport. As a result, the 17-year-old KNAF Talent First driver returns to the team that helped him become a double Formula 4 champion in 2016. Verschoor takes the place of Dorian Boccolacci, who is promoted to Formula 2 with MP.

Verschoor steps up to the GP3 Series after one and a half seasons in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and successful forays in the New Zealand Toyota Racing Series. The driver from Benschop made his motorsport debut in 2016 with a bang, when he managed to win both the North European and Spanish Formula 4 titles, also driving for MP Motorsport.

“It’s great that I’m able to take another step up the motorsport ladder,” says Verschoor. “The GP3 Series is a highly competitive series that showcases itself on Grand Prix weekends in front of Formula 1 teams. The fact that I’m going to drive for MP again feels like coming home. Spa is the most beautiful track for my GP3 debut: it’s not only a great track, but it’s going to be a great experience to race in front of grandstands packed with Dutch fans.”

“It’s great to have Richard back in the team,” says Sander Dorsman, team manager at MP Motorsport. “We have celebrated many triumphs together and we are determined to add success in GP3. It all coincides beautifully: Dorian Boccolacci grabs his opportunity with us in Formula 2, and Richard’s is a well-deserved promotion. And then for him to make his debut in front of a ‘home audience’ at Spa!”

Verschoor also continues to enjoy the support of the KNAF and his sponsors Mr Fill, VKV Group, VMT, and Oliegraphics in GP3. “We are very pleased with Richard getting the opportunity to demonstrate his skills at a higher level,” says Maarten van Wesenbeeck, who coordinates the KNAF Talent First programme on behalf of the Dutch national motorsport federation. “We’ve been supporting Richard from his time in karts and we are happy with his upward curve ever since. We are confident that he will familiarise himself quickly with GP3.”

Verschoor’s GP3 teammates will be Niko Kari from Finland and Devlin Defrancesco from Canada.
